Prawns Pil Pil – A Favourite Spinach Tapas of Spicy Prawns and Garlic

Prawns Pill Pil or Gambas Al Pil Pil is a very popular Spanish Tapas dish. Tapas are often served in small portions and its great for sharing. Spanish loves their get together and they show their love through sharing food with one another; and they do that with small portions of Tapas style dishes. Every time some says tapas, my eyes light up. I love tapas, because I get to taste cold, hot, cured, fried, bakes and all sort of small delicious dishes in one dinner sitting. How great is that.

Prawns pil pil dish is one of my favourite tapas dishes. I love my seafood, and this is one of those dishes I look forward to having amongst baby fried squid and Paella, when I visit Spain.


Prawns Pil Pil Recipe

This recipe only requires nine ingredients and of those get the quality of prawns and olive oil (not Virgin olive oil) right and the rest of the dish will come together. You can deshell the prawns completely or remove the heads and leave the shells on, it’s a personal preference.


Raw prawns


Normally Prawns Pil Pil are cooked in a ramekin and served, still sizzling away. The smell alone is enough to make your mouth salivate and look forward to that FIRST bite. When it is served to the table, you just grab a crusty bread and dip them into the dish to taste the wonderful spicy prawns with that amazing garlic oil. Absolutely heavily.


Marinated Prawns


I sometimes cook this Prawns pil pil in a large oven proof dish and leave it on the middle of the table to share, without any bread. Therefore, this recipe has less oil. If you want more oil to dip the bread in, I would suggest adding 2 more tablespoon into it before cooking.

A delicious spicy prawns and garlic dish served still sizzling in the pan it's cooked in. So easy to make and its a crowd plesere at any party.

  • 1 kg Prawns
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tsp Chilli powder
  • 2 tsp Chilli flakes
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 2 tsp Paprika
  • 7 cloves Garlic
  • 4 tbsp. Olive oil


  1. Mix all the ingredients together.
  2. Let it marinate for about 30 minutes
  3. Place them in the 220-degree Celsius pre-heated oven for 5 minutes.
  4. Stir the prawns and put it back in the oven for further 5 minutes.
